January 25: Chromebook care, Cardboard Convention After School Work Time, Family resources

 Hi, everyone,

Cardboard Convention work time

We are offering time at school for students to work on their Cardboard Convention project. This project is not required, but students and families can display their work on February 15 at 6:00 PM. Mr. Hansen and I are offering times after school on January 31, February 2, February 7, and February 9 between 4-5 PM. Please email this Cardboard Convention Permission Slip, if your child is going to stay and work in the LMC and STEM lab. If your child is a little confused, we will all make a paper prototype in STEM Monday and Tuesday.

Chromebook Care:

We are seeing a few more damaged Chromebooks recently, and right now, we do not have loaners available for students to borrow. I have two set aside for students who need to test. Central is doing their best to get repairs done. Please remind yourself of our repair policy in the One2World Handbook. For a brief period of time last year, if students were keeping the high quality, cloth, handled NutKases on their Chromebook, then fees were more likely to be waived. We were trying to incentivize getting students to use those cases, because they are pretty amazing. Please talk to your child about caring for their device.

Lost chargers are $25.

Family resources:

Looking for ideas for quality Internet activities for your children? Common Sense Media is in English and Spanish, and there are some nice lists of age-appropriate apps, videos, and websites. NEW FEATURE! Add your child's age to the front page, and Common Sense Media will give you reviews and suggestions for age appropriate fun. The ratings will take you deeper into whether your child's data is protected, too. Not sure how to negotiate screen time? Common Sense Media has advice under the Parent Tips and FAQs.

You can block things on your child's Chromebook, when they are at home. Here is a district flyer from last summer sharing information about Blocksi!

Let me know how else I can help direct you to tools for parenting in the screen age. I have a 19 and 22 year old, and we dealt with a lot of the challenges just like you:)

Have a wonderful week!

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
