December 16: Happy Winter Break! Classroom Updates - 16 de diciembre: ¡Felices vacaciones de invierno! Novedades en las aulas

Hi, Frisco Families,

I had a blast going with Mrs. Brendel's class to Francie's Cabin this week. Your kids are absolute troopers, because the hike is decently steep without a pack and snowshoes. The views were beautiful, and we will share photos with 5th grade families. Last week, students had a guest speaker share avalanche science, and and an astronomy guest speaker made the hike to do some activities with the kids.

5th graders have been studying earth and space science in their PYP Unit of Inquiry, so in STEM we built heat shields (STEM constructions) to protect the sensors (Snickers bar) of our Mars rover, as it entered Mars' atmosphere (hair dryer). We did not blow any fuses this year, and this year a few students used water as an insulator--really creative thinking!

1st graders finished their boat builds to save Minions. They quickly learned that cardboard needs to be covered with duct tape in order not to become waterlogged. I shared two ways to make their boats "go," another requirement, and they added and tested many of their own build ideas. We talked about how exciting it is to fail, because you learn something.

Kindergarten built homes from the past with Legos and homes from around the world using STEM supplies. We are learning that different materials create different construction appearances.

All students this week got to do fun winter-themed building challenges. Check out our Tallest Snowman Challenge, Marshmallow Vehicle STEM Challenges, and Snowball Fight Builds.

This month's IB Learner Profile is Reflective, and students were able to point out where in our STEM class we practice being reflective. Students mentioned that we always reflect on what went well and what we would do differently with more time. Students who are reflective are able to take action based on their reflection in order to grow:)

I will be teaching library and inquiry skills and planning with teachers over the next four weeks, so watch for an update soon!

Enjoy your holiday break! I am grateful to be a member of this community!

Hello, everyone! Please watch the video below for an update on what we have been doing in the STEM classroom! STEM meets twice a week for 30 minutes. PS, I forgot to mention the really cool landslide engineering / exploration fourth grade did earlier this week. Such a great project and really relevant with all of the rain and landslides this summer!  September 3 STEM Video Newsletter STEM Wish List aluminum tops of frozen juice containers toilet paper tubes cardboard gently used markers 20 oz. bottle tops

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

December 17: Turkey Day 5K - Wow!, STEM Happenings

Happy Holidays!    Lego credit goes to Naomi in 5th Grade! STEM Newsletter Watch this five minute video about STEM happenings. Here is the second part of that video . I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
