October 20: Family STEM Night, STEM Activities, LMC Action

 Dear Frisco Families,

As I have mentioned before, STEM is flip-flopping with music, and I am lucky to have 55 minute blocks of time to work with. Every week, your child gets two STEM times a week, and every other week, your child gets three STEM times during my month. On Monday, they started music again. Here are pictures of last week's events:

Kindergarten Creativity Planner - Kindergarteners built with different materials as they learned that architects build buildings that are strong, beautiful, and useful. They also made art out of play dough and pipe cleaners.

1st Grade Animal Adaptations and Dash - Students learned to use block programming to program the robot to act like an animal. Some students even programmed the robots with their own sounds.

2nd Grade Cubelets and Lego WeDo Programming - Students learned the basics for programming these robots. Later, we will integrate them into our STEM challenges.

3rd Grade Hurricane Inquiry and Design Challenge - Students researched hurricane damage, and they came up with maker space builds to meet those challenges.

4th Grade Snazzy Sneakers Design Challenge - Students interviewed a member of their team (client) in order to design the perfect pair of shoes for them.

5th Grade Build a Better Backpack / Little Bits Challenge - Students explored Little Bits electronics, and Ms. Brendel's class was able to use the electronics to improve a creative backpack design. Some included wheels that rolled automatically and security alarms!

This month, I will be taking your students once a week to use the library for inquiry and tech skills. This week, students learned where the nonfiction library materials are, which materials connect to their current unit of inquiry, and what call numbers go with nonfiction topics they are interested in.

VEX started last week, and I love having it during the day from noon to 12:40. I have six fifth grade teams who will compete against two other district elementary schools in February.

Don't forget about Family STEM Night on October 27 at 6:00 pm! Please sign up on this Google Form:)

Hello, everyone! Please watch the video below for an update on what we have been doing in the STEM classroom! STEM meets twice a week for 30 minutes. Such a great project and really relevant with all of the rain and landslides this summer!  September 3 STEM Video Newsletter STEM Wish List aluminum tops of frozen juice containers toilet paper tubes cardboard gently used markers 20 oz. bottle tops

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
