May 31: 5th Grade Chromebooks, Classroom Updates, Family Tech Info, Toys, SUMMER!:)

Family STEM Night
Challenge: Use your STEM materials to create a portrait of your principal. I think Henry's family nailed it.

Dear Frisco Families,

Enjoy the last video update of the year, and please be sure to check out the accompanying photos.

Family Tech Information

Read through this very important information from Central Office about your child's Chromebook or iPad! There is also a link to my favorite family tool Common Sense Media. Find out if movies or t.v. shows have content that you might find questionable, and check out their rating system for learning games. There is even a tab for parental advice, because I know we don't all have the answers for child cell phone boundaries. I love the family media plan in there, too.

I had collected 5th grade Chromebooks, and this was a mistake. They will be coming home with your child on Wednesday, June 1. Chromebooks will be collected at the beginning of 6th grade, so please have your charger and Chromebook ready to swap out.

Cool STEM Toys

Some time ago, I promised some of the kids a list of what we use in STEM. These toys have infinite learning opportunities, so if you decided that you wanted to spring for a holiday or birthday gift, you would not be treading on my STEM teacher toes.

Erone Fort Building Kit - Thank you, Quarantillo family, because these for blocks have been an enormous hit in STEM, and they are receiving much love from all levels. Families, for younger students, these are a little tough to make stay together, but a quick search for 'fort blocks,' and you will find boatloads of ones for the littles.

Dash Robot - Practice block coding with an iPad or iPhone app and this fun little dude. Perfect for grades 1 & 2.

Makey Makey - Students in 4th and 5th grade can enjoy combining block coding in Scratch with this fun little device.

Brain Flakes - A fun, meditative building toy for all ages.

Sphero - Block code this little robot to do all sorts of tricks you have created with the home makerspace. I feel it is best for grades 3-5.

Summer STEM Resources

Remember, we do a ton of really cool, creative things here with a lot of stuff that would just head to the landfill. Encourage those inventions and crazy brainstorms this summer. You are so lucky to have so many cool educational experiences here, and remember that STEM connects to just about everything. Encourage their curiosity, and connect things to STEM.

Science Buddies - This website is a long-time favorite of mine for fun science projects. There are featured projects and 'boredom boosters' here, too.

I am already excited for next year! Have a wonderful summer!

Hello, everyone! Please watch the video below for an update on what we have been doing in the STEM classroom! STEM meets twice a week for 30 minutes. PS, I forgot to mention the really cool landslide engineering / exploration fourth grade did earlier this week. Such a great project and really relevant with all of the rain and landslides this summer!  September 3 STEM Video Newsletter STEM Wish List aluminum tops of frozen juice containers toilet paper tubes cardboard gently used markers 20 oz. bottle tops

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
