April 11 - Sound, Kindergarten STEM Creativity, Chariots, STEM Family Night

 Dear Frisco Families,

I am excited to announce that we will have a STEM Family Night on May 9 from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM in the library media center. Please join us for some awesome family challenges! Complete the Google Form, so I know you are attending and can plan accordingly.

Kindergarten is working on a Creativity Planner, and we extended some of that creativity to STEM class where students used STEM materials to create art. First, they planned a very detailed drawing, and then they were given materials to work with.

First grade learned that sound is caused by vibrations, because the rubber band in their harmonicas vibrated when they blew into it. They brought those home, so be sure to ask about all the details.

Second grade is studying how plants and animals depend on one another. They created a Lego Wall full of Colorado flowers that pollinators love. They are currently creating a device that can do the work of pollinators, since pollinator population is declining.

Third grade has been learning about Native Americans, and they are using research to create a new invention to benefit their tribe. They must use the materials that would have been available to them in the past.

Fourth grade has learned how to use Tinkercad to create something to print on the 3D printer. They are combining their new 3D printing skills with the makerspace to invent something to protect their egg brain. Students are currently learning about forces in class, and protection from forces is really important in sports. More later, as we complete the builds and test them:)

Fifth grade wrapped up their chariots and is moving into coding stories using Scratch block coding. For more, check out CS First. Students will code characters that talk in really fun settings to tell a story.

VEX Club has completed its first robot and we have a gaming space (thanks, Mr. Hansen!). I will be switching our April 28 VEX club for May 5, and we will compete with one another on that day.

Have a lovely spring break! I am absolutely stunned by how quickly the year has gone!

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
