December 3: Spheros, code.org, Kodable, NASA resources

 Hi, everyone,

Please watch the five minute video newsletter to hear about Frisco Elementary's STEM activities over the last few weeks.

Photos

Kindergarten - I don't know how I forgot to mention these, but here are the kindergarteners with their marble mazes that they built. The challenge involved working with your team in order to get the marble to drop into their buckets.

2nd grade build a car that rolls challenge  These students went straight to the additional challenges of having it hold a Lego figure, and it had to roll when you blew it.

4th Grade Spheros and Soccer challenges center - I will take some of these next time. We were have issues:)

STEM Requests

thin cardboard like cereal boxes

regular cardboard

pipe cleaners

Cool resources

explore.org - Check out their live animal cams! They are so interesting, and the cams create a wonderful environment for asking LOTS of "I wonder" sorts of questions.

NASA Spinoff Technologies - Ever wonder why it might be important to have NASA? Check out the technology that comes from their scientists!

NASA Eyes Immersive Apps - According to NASA, you will, "Experience Earth and our solar system, the universe and the spacecraft exploring them, with immersive apps for Mac, PC and mobile devices."

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mortensen

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
