November 12 STEM Newsletter: PT Conferences, Turkey Day 5K, Coding, Marshmallow Extravaganza, and Design Thinking

Hello, Frisco Elementary Families!

As usual, we have been very busy, and I know you have too! Don't forget to check out the Turkey Day 5K, and consider volunteering and / or running. $4 of each runner goes to Frisco Elementary's STEM program, and I am so appreciative of that amazing support.

I'll see you again after Thanksgiving! Stay tuned and stay in touch! Please visit my table in the Frisco Elementary Library on Monday, November 15, Tuesday, November 16, and Wednesday, November 17 from 4:00-6:30. I also invite you to wander through the STEM lab during those times as well. I will have the following things to share with you:

  • Digital literacy resources - How do you set family screen time expectations? Do they need a cell phone? How do we make sure they stay safe and kind online?
  • SeeSaw - SeeSaw is where we are posting your child's work. Can I help you get set up in your child's class?
  • Frisco Elementary's STEM Program - What does it mean to be a STEM school? How are we working to grow our program here at Frisco Elementary? How is our program different from other elementary programs?
  • At home STEM resources - Looking for some fun activities to do at home? I might have some ideas:)

Current donation needs:

Cardboard - always:)

toilet paper tubes - (yes, still--probably always)

pipe cleaners

bottle caps

plastic spoons

Feel free to send these items in with your children. They can bring them right into the STEM lab.

Your partner in fostering curiosity and innovation,

Mrs Mortensen

Welcome to STEM!

Dear Panther Families, I am so excited to be a part of your Frisco Elementary teaching faculty, and I’m excited to work with your children in STEM class! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and our class explores the process of engineering design, and we collaborate with teachers to connect classroom activities to real life careers. We will learn and practice good digital citizenship, too. Wait until you see the tools we will use to imagine, build, and reimagine! I come to you from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, a town between Madison and Milwaukee. My husband Jason and I have two children. Our daughter Alex is a junior at Indiana-Bloomington, and our son Brendan is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (my alma mater! Go, Badgers!). We love live music, running, hiking, and skiing, much like everyone else in this beautiful county. Professionally, I have taught six years of third grade, two years of fourth grade, and seven years of sixth grade, three y...

I will be requesting NutKases for grades 3 and 4 when we come back from break. If you would like to put in an order before then , here is the link to do so. NutKases are fabulously protective of your child's technology, and as I have been sharing, most damage will be waived, if we know your child has the case on when damage occurs.  If you have already requested one, please ask your child if it is on their Chromebook. Some of the older students have them, but they are sometimes a little resistant to using them.  You can clean the outside of the Chromebook and the keyboard with wipes or a damp cloth. There have been a few cases wher...
